Extract the XML from a Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF

Take the XML invoice out of a Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF. Copy it or save it as an XML file. Free, no account.

How to extract the XML from a Factur-X PDF

  1. Upload your Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF, up to 10 MB.

  2. Press Extract the XML. The invoice is the XML file attached to the PDF: it is found and unpacked for you.

  3. Copy the XML or save it as a file. You can then convert it, or show it as a PDF.

What to expect

A Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF is a normal PDF with the invoice attached to it as an XML file. This tool finds that file and gives it to you as it is, without changing a character: it is not converted, checked or validated here. A PDF that is only a picture of an invoice, with no XML attached, has nothing to extract. A PDF that asks for a password cannot be opened.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and you do not need an account.

What happens to my PDF?

Your file is read to find the invoice in it. The XML stays available on our server for about thirty seconds, only so that your browser can fetch it, then it is discarded. Nothing is kept after that, and your invoice is not used for anything else or shared with anyone.

What is a Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF?

A PDF that people read as usual, with the same invoice attached to it as an XML file, which software reads. Factur-X, and ZUGFeRD 2, which is the same format, carry a CII invoice, usually named factur-x.xml or zugferd-invoice.xml.

Why does my PDF have no invoice?

Most PDF invoices are only a picture of an invoice: there is no XML in them. Only a Factur-X or ZUGFeRD PDF carries one. If yours should, ask the sender for the XML invoice, or which format their software produces.

What can I do with the XML?

Convert it between CII and UBL with the converter, or read it as a clear PDF with the viewer. Both are on this site. The XML of a ZUGFeRD 1.0 invoice is an older one, which neither of them reads.
